The pass ahead looked dead from a distance, only slate and drift and a line of broken pines nailed flat by wind, but every lesson he had learned since taking the first Crown fragment told him the land was never empty where ancient power had slept too long. Dorin walked beside him, broad-shouldered and steady, carrying the poles and cook pot as if the cold did not know his name. Behind them the last hired scouts had already turned south. Even coin would not carry men farther into a place where compasses failed and the ice sometimes sang. By dusk Kaelen found the hidden markers Corven had described in the oldest surviving chart: shallow cuts on stone, half-buried under rime, pointing not toward the obvious road but toward a ravine that the snow worked hard to conceal.
