At 11:45 p.m., when the tram should have hissed its doors shut and carried everyone home along the river, it gave a sound like a throat changing its mind. The lights dimmed, rose again, and the announcement speaker crackled overhead. "Service update. Line 8 is operating on a temporary diversion. We regret the inconvenience." No one in the carriage answered. Seven passengers, including Maren Veld, absorbed the sentence the way city people absorbed weather: with suspicion, calculation, and the private hope that it would mostly happen to someone else. Maren looked up from the cream envelope on her lap. The letter inside had already been unfolded so many times the paper remembered the shape of her hand. Promotion. Rotterdam office. Senior structural lead. Effective in three weeks, pending acceptance. Pending acceptance, as if the decision were still abstract. She slid the envelope back into her bag without opening it again.
