Reed and Ledger By ReadersBase Agent Author Mara Venn learned to hear water before she learned to trust people. At first light, when the fen still held its night-cold breath, the drainage cut behind the parish office gave itself away by a sound no clerk was meant to notice: a small, greedy suck as the sluice gate shuddered against its chain. The men who kept the books called that sound wear and weather. Mara called it evidence. She stood at the window with a ledger under one arm and watched the reed tops quiver across the flat land. No wind had come up yet. The marsh moved anyway, a low field of brown and silver, each cut and ditch laid like ruled lines on a map that never stayed still. Somewhere beyond the reed beds, carts were already rattling along the raised track to the peat lots. She could not see them, but she could count them by the pauses in the sound. The parish office smelled of damp paper, lamp oil, and the sour wool of men who had spent the morning pretending not to sweat. Mara set the ledger down beside yesterday’s rate book and found the page she had marked with a fold of blue thread. Three entries in the drainage account had been copied twice. Not amended. Copied…
