Candlelit Evidence Evie Park could tell which tables were loved by the way the varnish wore away—not in bald circles, but in soft ovals where elbows had leaned for years. In her quilt shop, the cutting counter had that same gentle shine, the wood polished by patience and worry. This morning, Founders Day bunting turned Main Street into a cheerful lie. Blue-and-cream ribbons looped from lamppost to lamppost, and the sea wind worried them like fingers picking at a seam. Someone had tied the first loop on the wrong side of the post, and the knot bulged where it ought to have hidden. Evie straightened a stack of fat quarters—coastal blues, sand colors, a print of tiny sailboats that looked like it had been designed by someone who’d never been on a boat—and pretended she hadn’t noticed the knot. She was practicing being the sort of person who did not correct the world. It was not going well. The bell over her door chimed.
