The Easement at Dry Creek Delilah Cazares watched the county truck turn off the dirt and climb the last switchback as if it had all the time in the world. Dust rose, hung, and settled onto the greasewood with a patience she recognized. The man inside would leave a piece of paper. The paper would decide whether her cattle drank next spring. She didn’t wave. She didn’t hurry. She stayed on the porch of her late husband’s house—her house, now—where the boards bowed in familiar places under her boots. From here she could see Dry Creek’s draw, a pale scar through the sage, and the thin, dark ribbon of pipe that carried water from the spring-box up to the tanks. She could also see where the old grazing corridor narrowed between her fence line and the BLM boundary markers: a choke point Stroud had been circling for months like a hawk riding a thermal. The truck stopped by the gate. The driver didn’t get out right away. He looked at the house, the porch, the woman standing dead still. His eyes flicked to the “Cazares” sign bolted to the post.
